 About
The Designer, Sasha Sykes
Sasha Sykes (28) is an artist and designer who creates bespoke
furniture through her company farm21.
Drawing inspiration from the rural, agricultural heritage of her
native Ireland, she works combining modern processes with traditional
materials and crafts, and has been developing her style since 1995.
Sasha says: "I like to re-present the incredible beauty of
the rural world in another context. Working with acrylics and resins
allows me to expose the textures and forms (of organic matter) within
a familiar overall structure, creating a rural aesthetic for urban
times"
Sasha's background is in Architecture (Edinburgh University MA,
1998) which can be seen in the clean, modern lines of her pieces.
She also practices as an Interior designer, and worked on a number
of high end retail projects at London's Shopworks Design Ltd before
going solo.
Her most widely recognized piece of work is the Straw Cube, which
was one of the hits of the 100% Design Show in London (2002) and
has been featured on the cover of both IDFX and Living etc in the
past year alone. Her work has been covered by numerous prestigious
publications in the UK and Ireland (Vogue, GQ, Arena, CN Traveller,
Gardens Illustrated, Attitude, London Sunday Times, London Telegraph
Magazine, London Evening Standard, The Irish Times, and Image Interiors),
and The New York Times, Fine Furnishings International and Gotham
magazine in the US. Her clients include a number of Collectors and
Society players on both sides of The Atlantic.
Sasha is married to the writer Tom Sykes and moved to Manhattan
in January 2004. She is now running operations between London, Ireland
and New York from her mid-town studio.
